Much of the damage we repair happens in a drawer rather than on a hand. Diamonds scratch other stones, chains tangle and kink, and silver tarnishes in open air. A few habits prevent most of it.
Separate every piece
Use individual pouches or a lined box with dividers. Diamonds are hard enough to scratch sapphires, gold and almost everything else.
Hang or lay chains flat
Fine chains kink when balled up. Fasten the clasp before storing so the chain cannot loop through itself, or hang them on a stand.
Protect silver from air
Anti-tarnish strips or zip bags dramatically slow tarnish. Store silver away from rubber and wool, which accelerate it.
Keep pearls breathing
Pearls need some humidity. Store them in a soft cloth pouch, not airtight plastic, and put them on after perfume and hairspray.
Travel smart
Use a dedicated travel roll and carry jewelry on your person rather than in checked luggage. Take the ring off before swimming; cold water shrinks fingers.
